about

Everyday Pleasures (2016) was written at the request of Duo Montagnard. The title reflects its good-natured character; the work tends toward the “breezy” side of the musical spectrum while embracing many traditional elements. Formally, it derives its inspiration from the numerous sonata-rondo forms that came before it. It is tonal (though the modulations and chord choices may strike the traditionalist as surprising), melodic (though predictable phrase lengths are often spiced up by mixed-meter accents), and developmental throughout. The intended lightness of the piece gave license to the composer to follow whimsical directions, such as the sudden veering into Spanish-inflected music toward the end of the piece. Hats off to Duo Montagnard for bringing out the various characters of the piece so brilliantly!

Perry Goldstein (born 1952 in New York City, New York) studied at the University of Illinois, UCLA, and Columbia University, from which he received a doctorate in music composition in 1986. His principal composition teachers were Herbert Brün, Chou Wen-Chung, Mario Davidovsky, Ben Johnston, and Paul Zonn. Goldstein has been called a composer of “consummate structural and inventive artistry” (CD Spotlight) and various works have been described as “percussive and pummeling” (The New York Times), “an-I-dare-you contraption” (Fanfare), “a raw-boned tour-de-force” (The Buffalo News), “genuine firework[s]” (Achener Zeitung), and “jazz-paced, abrasive, [and] ultimately cathartic” (The Los Angeles Times). Many of his almost 20 works for saxophone are in the standard repertoire for the instrument.
