I wrote FRISS for the amazing Greek guitar virtuoso Antigoni Goni and the brilliant flutist Laura Gilbert. The piece was premiered at the Onassis Foundation in May 2001. Many years later Laura performed the piece with Matt Slotkin. He approached me about a piece, and we decided that I would arrange FRISS for Duo Montagnard. While there are a number of significant changes made between the flute and saxophone version, the latter retains the devilish and mercurial energy of the original. FRISS is based on a Hungarian folk song that tells a story with a theme common to many folk tales: the devil appears and is vanquished by ordinary humans, tricked and again warded off until his next appearance.
