about

David Kechley’s early work is highly chromatic and expressionist as exemplified by Second Composition for Large Orchestra, premiered by the Seattle Symphony in 1968. Modality and lyricism followed in the mid 1970s as did minimalist tendencies in the early 1990s. His music now draws on all of these as well as works from past centuries and the present including jazz, popular, and ethnic music. Although these influences are generally integrated into a consistent style, the result is often a mix of sharp contrasts between lyricism, virtuosity, and dramatic gesture. Kechley’s work has been performed extensively throughout much of the world, is available through pinevalleypress.com, and is recorded on the Innova, Liscio, Reference Recordings, and Albany labels.

BOUNCE: Inventions, Interludes, and Interjections takes its title from the opening rhythmic figure, which is later transformed to create the final and most energetic “inventions” of the work. These are in contrast to the interludes with their longer and more lyrical phrases. The dramatic “interjections” may occur at unexpected times to indicate the approach of a new and changing mood. Although the sub-title seems to imply a number of discrete or separate pieces, the work is played without pause as it moves from one musical character to the next each of which can be traced back to statements made during the first few minutes of the musical narrative.
